Corn"Swampabilly Snake Oil Freakshow is tight, smart, funky, funny and all over the map musically...a steaming plate of corn fed
swingin' jug band blues." ---Kurt Dahlke, Cascade Blues Notes, June 2001
"

Fresh from a strong showing in the finals of the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge, Junkyard Jane has kicked its already formidable momentum up a few notches with the release of its third CD, the accurately titled Swampabilly Snake Oil Freakshow. This musically colorful concoction offers many joys to the listener -- tight vocal arrangements, excellent production, and JJ's trademark warped sense of humor -- but perhaps the greatest pleasure it delivers is the opportunity to hear a band so completely in command of its own musical ship. This is unquestionably Junkyard Jane's most consistently satisfying release so far, and it wonderfully captures the band in full embrace of its unique talents and sensibilities."

The Dangerous Kind By Pat Coast
A Good Night For The Blues By Pat Coast

History:
Cafe Blue is an 8 piece Blues Band that has been performing around the inland northwest for the past nine years. Originally formed as a 6 piece r&b band, subsequent personnel changes and the addition of an alto saxophone and a second drummer/percussionist have caused the group to evolve into a modern blues band that better reflects the personalities involved. Because of the differing backgrounds of each musician, Cafe Blue is able to cover a wide range of blues styles, from the skankiest Texas style blues to the slow burning funk of Albert King, to straight Chicago blues, as well as the syncopated New Orleand sound, always able to weave a touch of jazz or soul throughout.

Members of the band include Pat Coast, guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter.Keyboards are handled by Keith Lewis, one of the founding members of the band and also a vocalist. Holding down the bass guitar is the very talented Tom Brewster. The other half of the rhythm section is actually a third, as Cafe Blue features two drummers. Bill Bancroft has been with Cafe Blue 5 years and also plays a full percussion setup of congas, timbales, and hand percussion instruments. The Cafe Blue horn section features another founding member, Russ Hoffer, on tenor and Baritone saxes. Russ handles many of the Cafe Blue horn arrangements. Also, on tenor and alto saxes is Bob Spittal, on trumpet, Buzz Graham rounds out the section. Cafe Blue’s recently released CD, “A Good Night For The Blues”, has been recieving great reviews, and been selling well. Burnside Records in Portland has just agreed to distribute the CD, and many songs have been written now for the next CD, which tentatively is scheduled to go into production in September 1999.

In The Dark
Hard Luck Child

About the Artist:
A lone piano sits highlighted by a stream of light. Drink glasses clink around the room. Cigarette smoke floats lazily toward the ceiling. A man in a white tuxedo crosses the floor and sits down at the keyboard. The deep voice croons an old song of lost love and lonely pain. Clip from an old 40's movie? Nope, "Miss Sister's Blues Boy" has taken center stage. Mel Oliphant is the personification of class. From the white tuxedo to the thoughtful selection of his music, Mel has developed his act with an eye to the great entertainers of the 30's and 40's.

"Mel brings a touch of class to the Blues" ......Wayne Ellis ...The Every Other Weekly
